The Young People's Liberation Project (YPLP) at CARA supports young people organizing for safety, support, and liberation. We work creatively and collectively to challenge rape, abuse, and oppression.
YPLP organizing projects are young people-initiated and driven. CARA is a resource for young people who want to create support for young survivors of rape and abuse, as well as young people who want to work to end all forms of violence and oppression through activism and community-organizing.
Our primary organizing strategies are:
1. Popular education:
YPLP members facilitate workshops & discussions for youth organizations, social service agencies, community-based groups, and the general public. Workshop topics have included community organizing, rape culture, gender and sexuality, healthy relationships, ageism/adultism, and anti-racism.
2. Creating a culture of resistance and liberation:
One way to challenge rape culture is to create something to replace it. Some YPLP culture-building projects include Feeding Back, a 2002 summer conference that focused on young people claiming space and creating change in Seattle's all-ages music community, and Ladies First, a monthly spoken word event centering the voices of young women of color.
3. Peer support/discussion groups:
YPLP members organize support and/or discussion groups by and for young people. These groups focus on building community, raising consciousness, empowerment and support. Some YPLP groups include WIP (Women in Power), a support group focusing on the empowerment of young women, and Scratching Post, a monthly discussion series organized by the YPLP Community Action Team.
